UK WILPF

WILPF LogoThe Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is an international NGO with National Sections in 35 countries. WILPF has consultative status with the UN to formally lobby the UN and its agencies on issues related to peace, disarmament and economic justice. WILPF was founded in 1915 when 1300 women met to protest against a war in Europe. WILPF is the oldest women's peace organisation. WILPF continues to campaign for peace, justice, equality and the full enjoyment of human rights for all.

Our new website is still under construction, please bear with us while we upload all UK WILPF's documents and resources.

Put People First Campaign Continues

WILPF has worked with other NGOs to write a response to the G20 outcome document. In the Beyond the London Summit document we ask Gordon Brown to attend the United Nations Conference on the economic crisis at the end of June in New York, in person. Rich countries need to hear about the effects of the global financial crisis on developing countries and the extra burden now being carried by women across the globe.

A background paper on the effects of the economic recession on women in developing countries prepared by Womankind, as well as a WILPF leaflet is available from the WILPF office.

Look out for local events organised to coincide with the next G20 summit in the U.S on 24-25 September. The G20 finance ministers meet at St Andrews in Scotland on November 7 and there will be Put People First meetings in several cities including St Andrews and London at that time

This is an opportunity for us to campaign to show that there is an alternative to, greed and exploitation and to say Put People First - but don't put women second.

The document is available as a pdf here

European Security Policy

European WILPF sections are increasingly concerned by military and security policy put forward by the European Union. We are concerned that the Lisbon Treaty moves away from confidence building and towards mutual military defence.

For WILPF, peace means human security. Human Security means that people are safe within themselves and that they live in a society which takes into account the vital needs of all human beings: food, shelter, work, health, education, human rights, women's rights and dignity. We can testify that in their struggle for survival, women all over the world have acquired an invaluable, yet non-recognized, skill in meeting these needs. Women everywhere should have their say in national and international decision making. We think that we should give more attention to the struggle against the causes violence.

In order to start a deeper debate in the upcoming EU Parliamentarian Elections, the European sections within WILPF have produced a publication about the European defence, security and foreign policy. This publication will be useful in election debates and, we hope, will also influence your choice when you vote. Hopefully it will set a new and peaceful direction towards global peace, security and justice.
