Militarism, Masculinity and Men

Image WILPF AGM and Spring Seminar

Most of us have a hunch that militarism is connected in some way to masculinity. But to raise the matter seems to bring us perilously close to suggesting that, in matters of violence and war, women have clean hands. What can reasonably be thought and said about this difficult issue? Even more to the point, what can be done? Join us for our Spring Seminar as Cynthia Cockburn leads is in an inspiring and thought-provoking discussion

When: Saturday 20 March

Registration starts at 10am, with the formal business of the AGM from 10:30am, Lunch is from 12pm, and the Seminar will commence at 1:00pm, followed by campaigning workshops

Where: Amnesty International Action Centre, 17-25 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EA

WILPF responds to Haiti Disaster

On January 12, Haiti was hit hard by a disastrous earthquake, which damaged its capital Port-au-Prince and surroundings. Approximately three million people are dependent on medical assistance, shelter, water, food and sanitation, and corpse management. The most current estimations put the loss of life at an estimated 50.000 individuals.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom has urged UN Member States and Agencies engaged in the Haiti relief effort to build on current efforts by ensuring gender sensitive relief efforts and emphasizing that humanitarian assistance should never be mixed with military purposes.

The Women's International Leage for Peace and Freedom urge the UN member states and Agencies to develop their efforts on:
1) The specific role and involvement of women in the provision of relief aid;
2) The participation of women in the planning and decision making of rehabilitation and development efforts; and
3) Disaster risk reduction and disaster preparedness projects in the rehabilitation and development phase
